The purpose of my action research project was to discover how the registrar and the information they collect could be used more effectively for student retention. Could preregistration be used by academic advisors to build relationships with their students?

Throughout the process, I discovered that student retention begins the moment a potential student inquires about our college. Everything we do impacts retention. I also discovered that digital technology does not replace the advisor but it does enhance academic advising.

I began by asking how the process of preregistration could be simplified and streamlined. I noticed students were overwhelmed and advisors were afraid they would give the wrong advice. I wondered if academic advisors could use digital technology to develop relationships with their students.

My greatest takeaway from this project is that academic advisors are vital for preregistration to be streamlined and simplified. The registrar supports advisors and students in preregistration. Every department in the institution has a part in student retention. The registrar's role is to support each department.
